BRIGHT LIGHT

BRIGHT LIGHT is an exhibition of paintings produced from the art making I love most. My collaboration with the materials describe a subjective sense of light that exists within me. Oil paint and timber are held together in a textural, colourful and emotional interplay. Having shaped these materials by hand, they record my presence and manifest the same feelings as this emotional lightness within.
These paintings reference moments from the everyday - landscape, weather and memory. Colour and light in the natural environment are driving forces behind the compositions, but colour becomes more than the figurative - it is emotional. In layers and strokes of paint, colours communicate and contrast with one another, recalling past moments and places, emanating this specific sense of light. Simultaneously, these colours reach out to the viewer, questioning personal associations and celebrating their own integrity and individuality as a material.


There is a bright light burning inside of me. Sometimes it is large and strong, flowing through my body from deep inside to the tips of my fingers and the pores of my skin open in the air. Other times it is just a smouldering coal, a tiny lick of flame dancing from a candle in the dark.
This light is an adaptable companion, always in the backwaters of my body.
